Requires countertop deep enough for clamp This attachment also includes a one-year manufacturer's warranty (though in general, it should last much longer). The blades and peeler are all dishwasher safe, but the main body of the spiralizer has to be washed by hand, which is an easy task because it doesn't tend to get much food on it. Still, this is a particularly versatile attachment as it was able to slice any veggie or fruit our tester tried-even dense sweet potatoes. The peeler worked well for our tester's apple crisps, but she did note that irregular shapes (like a sweet potato) can cause it to skip small sections of peel. After some trial and error, our tester was able to core apples successfully ("uniform pieces that were easy to remove"). The slicing and spiralizing functions performed extremely well in tests and will definitely save you time in the kitchen. Our tester used the attachment to peel, slice, and spiralize apples for apple crisps and found all the blades to be extremely sharp. The parts include a fine spiralizer, a medium spiralizer, a spiral slice (small core), a spiral slice (large core), and a peeler. As with all of the KitchenAid attachments, this one is sturdy and hardworking. If you already own a KitchenAid mixer, this attachment makes peeling, coring, and slicing apples and other fruit and vegetables a breeze. Here, the best apple peelers, slicers, and corers, according to extensive real-life testing.įor serious cooks and bakers, the KitchenAid mixer and its attachments are some of the best investments you can make. We tested a wide range of options-from electric to manual and handheld to countertop-so each home cook and aspiring apple pie baker can find the right fit for their kitchen. Then, they rated each one on design, versatility, performance, ease of use, cleaning, and overall value. They spent hours peeling, coring, and slicing apples in addition to other veggies. To figure out which peelers are the best for apples, we sent top-rated options to our expert home testers. Not all peelers are created alike and some are designed to be multipurpose tools. But what about all the work involved? Peeling, coring, and slicing apples can be a chore, but like with anything in the kitchen, there’s usually a way to make it easier, and that comes down to the right tools. Truthfully, though, apples need to be peeled year-round whether you simply prefer to eat them unpeeled or need them for a recipe. Apple pies, apple cobblers, apple crunches, apple butters, apple preserves, and apple chutneys are all great choices for seasonal fare. Galen Lehman, the son of the founder of Lehman's, has informed me that his company also produces other hard-to-find items like vintage style corn planters, butter churns, and farm bells. As the leaves start turning and temperatures cool down, we often think about what cooler months promise for our tables-and our apples. Originally made by the Reading Hardware Works in Reading, Pennsylvania, this sturdy machine surprisingly continues to be manufactured and sold right here in Ohio by Lehman's, a well known, fascinating, and eclectic country store located in Kidron, in Ohio's Amish country. Although mechanical apple peelers had been around since the dawn of the 1800's, the Reading machine was tough as nails, and well-designed enough to cleanly peel more than ten apples a minute helping to make apple cider, apple butter, and apple sauce relative snaps to prepare. This amazing original Reading 78 Apple peeler, (patented in 1872, and first produced in 1878) that you see in the photo, was one of those inventions. The 19th century was a time of many great inventions in our country. Perhaps you've read of the adventures of the preacher, John Chapman, perhaps better know as "Johnny Appleseed," and his oft-barefooted walk through this state, establishing apple orchards. Kia has long been considered an economical car brand, and at under $30k, the Kia Niro is no exception. *The 2023 Kia Niro likely does not qualify for the federal tax credit because it is manufactured outside North America. The 2023 RAV4 Prime differs little from previous models, although it now includes the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 suite and a new multimedia system. Though the Niro and Escape offer slightly better fuel efficiency, the Prime wins points for its fast response time and roomy interior. Plan on 12 hours for a 120-volt plug, or 4.5 hours with 240-volts.įor those who want a plug-in electric vehicle with near-identical functionality to a traditional SUV, the Rav4 Prime should top your list. However, charging will take slightly longer than for its competitors. This means you can travel up to 600 miles between stops. This PHEV is well suited for long trips, as it contains a 14.5-gallon gas tank. Many people will appreciate that the 18.1 kWh lithium-ion battery is mounted under the floor-meaning there’s no loss of interior space for passengers. Not only does this car deliver as a PHEV, but it’s also arguably the best RAV on the market, with bolder styling and quieter running than the standard version. This means the Prime can travel at speeds up to 84 miles per hour on electric power alone. Combine that with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine for a total output of up to 302 horsepower. At 42 miles a charge, it offers the highest EV range of any plug-in SUV and also includes one of the most powerful electric motors-beating the much-praised 2023 Toyota Prius by two electric miles per charge. *We believe the RAV4 Prime is no longer eligible for the federal tax credit because it is built in Japan.Īs a notable member of the popular RAV line, the RAV4 Prime is Toyota’s first foray into the plug-in hybrid SUV market. Now, let’s look at how some of the most popular plug-in hybrid SUVs compare to each other from an efficiency standpoint. The most efficient cars will rank high in each category, meaning that they can travel far on just electricity while also efficiently burning gasoline when the battery gets depleted. Miles Per Gallon of Gasoline Equivalent (MPGe): your car’s estimated efficiency when driving on both electric and gas power, calculated to show what the MPG would be if you were running on gas alone.Miles Per Gallon (MPG): your average gas efficiency, usually accounting for both city and highway driving.Electric Vehicle (EV) Range: the average distance your vehicle can travel without gas on a full charge. When it comes to choosing your PHEV, the numbers you need to pay attention to are the following: Comparing their stats to find which one will get you further can be confusing, so we broke down the decision process here. Today, a range of plug-in hybrid SUVs are available from popular brands, including Subaru, Kia, Toyota, and more. With the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, it is also likely that a select few PHEVs will qualify for the EV tax credit. Most owners will also plug their car in once they are home for the day, thus ensuring it’s fully charged by the morning. Running the car’s engine will charge the battery, and regenerative braking (lifting off the accelerator or pushing the brakes) also sends energy into the battery.Ĭity dwellers can take advantage of public electric chargers at work or on day trips, which might make it possible to drive without ever needing a gas refill. The primary reason to consider a PHEV is that it gives you the flexibility to charge your car at home so you can take short trips without using any fuel whatsoever. You’ll also have more selection when shopping for a hybrid, and they tend to offer excellent fuel economy and lots of interior space. Why would you purchase a plug-in hybrid SUV over a standard hybrid? After all, both vehicles include gasoline engines paired with electric motors. Lansing describes Shackleton’s appearance in a vivid manner: But, restless and resolute as he was, just a few years later, he turned to the “one great object of Antarctic journeyings” remaining: transatlantic journey, i.e., crossing Antarctica from the Wendell Sea via the South Pole to McMurdo Sound. It was almost as if he had nothing to accomplish anymore. However, when Amundsen reached the Farthest South latitude (90°S) on December 15, 1911, Shackleton was a bit shackled. It was during this trip that he, Scott, and another companion set a new southern record (82°S), which Shackleton would better just a few years later during the Nimrod expedition (88°S). His first experience of the polar regions came relatively early: he was in his 20s when he was assigned the role of third officer on Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s landmark Discovery expedition of 1901–1904 that was organized by the British Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Society with the objective of carrying out scientific research and geographical exploration of the untouched continent. The Protagonist: Sir Ernest Henry Shackletonīorn on February 15, 1874, in Ireland, Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton is now widely considered one of the principal figures of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Why would someone set before himself such a goal? Well, maybe it’s best if we dedicate the first two sections of our summary to answering this question. However, Alfred Lansing’s Heroic Age classic, Endurance, is not about Robert Falcon Scott-a celebrated hero of his day and age, but also someone whose leadership qualities and competence of character have been questioned in recent times-but about one of his officers during previous journeys, Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton.Īnd it’s not about merely reaching the South Pole, but about something even more daunting and unimaginable: crossing the entire continent from sea to sea, via the pole. That happened in December 1911, when a highly prepared Norwegian expedition led by Roald Amundsen decisively beat the (ironically) better-remembered one led by a British Royal Navy Officer named Robert Falcon Scott. Though some of them had scientific interests, the primary object of most of these expeditions was, interestingly, to become the first expedition to reach the geographic South Pole. To history buffs and readers of exploration literature, this period is mostly known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.įor a reason: during the Heroic Age, no less than 17 major Antarctic expeditions were launched from 10 different countries of the world. Plotįirst discovered by a Russian expedition in 1820, the continent of Antarctica became an object of fascination for numerous explorers around the world during the last years of the 19 th century and the first two decades of the 20 th century. The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a comparatively new parameter, which describes the distinctive placement of a document on the Web. Typical fields in bibliographic records are – author, article title, journal name, volume, issue, year of publishing, pages, etc. The bibliographic databases usually do not have the full text of a document, however it records information about a single publication, patents, and similar documents. Structured databases are generally classified into two large groups in terms of its contents as bibliographic and factographic. The Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number (CAS RN) is an example of the primary key for the structure in the REGISTRY database. Each record is always assigned a unique “ID” or “Number” called as identifier or the primary keys, which are easily referenced. On the other hand, structured databases normally include a set of tables that contain records or rows, all of which have the same structure well defined by a set of fields or columns. The largest database of this type on this globe is definitely operated by Google, in which documents and other accessible files are uploaded on the internet in the form of websites. This type of database is commonly run by publishers of magazines and books, patent offices for patents or academic institutions. Ī full-text database is generally a set of documents in which indexes are created to facilitate their fast search. full-text and the structures, based on the category of data contained. The databases are broadly distributed in two major group’s viz. It is must to have a better understanding of how the data is organized and interconnected for the effective search in any database. Therefore, the computer supported databases are becoming useful tools for several research laboratories in industry as well as in academia. The proficiency of search algorithms executed within these databases are very crucial. The dimension of all databases either in terms of the structures or that of the reactions are growing tremendously each year. Accessing chemical information that are stored in different kinds of databases by utilizing the means of computer are gradually becoming more significant. Chemical databases have now become a powerful tool in drug discovery.ĭatabase searches based on potential requirements for biological activity identifies compounds that are suitable for detailed analysis or indicate novel ways to achieve the desired activity. In addition to the basic search techniques that are used today in almost everyday life, such as searching by keyword search engines, there are some areas of chemistry that are not so simple or meaningful. A database is an organized collection of data in any field. This vast information data must be systematically organized by the experts in the field. Chemistry is an interdisciplinary subject upon which the other scientific disciplines are dependent to a certain extent. The abundance of technological and Internet resources can both simplify and complicate a researcher’s world. The amount of information available today is growing at an exponential rate and the ability to search for the necessary information is one of the basic needs of knowledge. Thus, substance and citation databases that covers almost all areas of chemistry, has become an invaluable tool in bibliometric analysis. It also gives a brief description of three major commercial databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, and SciFinder. This paper provides an overview of the most frequently used free chemistry databases such as PubChem, Crystallography Open Database, PubMed, ZINC, ChemSpider, and Google Scholar. The benefits that databases can provide in the preparation of the literature review for developing future studies and dissemination of research are discussed. If a library can only afford one, choice must be based on the priorities of institutional needs. None of the databases are complete and perfect, but they complement each other. This review offers information on the important points of the database. As a result, some analysts of China-Africa relations argue, or at least imply, that China does things as it wishes in Africa and that African countries have little agency in shaping how Chinese governmental and commercial players operate in their countries. Research on China’s engagement abroad and Chinese firms’ business operations in foreign countries often argues that Chinese organizations are not keen to adapt to local contexts. His current research looks at corporate partnerships in emerging countries, particularly Sino-African business relations. He specializes in international joint ventures and cooperation with countries in the Global South. To deepen the impact of such efforts, they should also encourage Chinese organizations active in West Africa, and across the continent in general, to embrace the use of local languages, especially for conducting business, and to train more Chinese expatriates to use African managerial philosophies that have proven to respect local values while being effective in African markets.Ībdoulkadre Ado is an associate professor of international business and global management at University of Ottawa’s Telfer School of Management. It would be beneficial for African governments, businesses, and corporate managers to explore further ways to incentivize Chinese government decisionmakers and Chinese businesses to use joint ventures more often as the vehicle for their investments in Africa. In doing so, Chinese organizations have responded to some of the demands of their African partners in local, state, and central government posts. Chinese firms are also complementing these growing business arrangements with the use of local languages, social media outreach, and other forms of local engagement with West Africans. This has been especially true in three key economic sectors: free trade zone promotion and related services, transportation and aviation, and oil and gas. Investing in joint ventures has enabled Chinese cultural adaptation by emphasizing training programs in languages commonly spoken in West Africa, embracing local management styles, and assimilating some local practices. Joint ventures have enabled Chinese companies to cultivate a presence in three West African countries-Ghana, Niger, and Nigeria. Ultimately, the project aims to significantly broaden understanding and debate about China’s role in the world and to generate innovative policy ideas. Through a mix of research and strategic convening, this project explores these complex dynamics, including the ways Chinese firms are adapting to local labor laws in Latin America, Chinese banks and funds are exploring traditional Islamic financial and credit products in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, and Chinese actors are helping local workers upgrade their skills in Central Asia. These adaptive Chinese strategies that accommodate and work within local realities are mostly ignored by Western policymakers in particular. With a generous multiyear grant from the Ford Foundation, Carnegie has launched an innovative body of research on Chinese engagement strategies in seven regions of the world-Africa, Central Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and North Africa, the Pacific, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. But Chinese players also extend their influence by working through local actors and institutions while adapting and assimilating local and traditional forms, norms, and practices. Many argue that China exports its developmental model and imposes it on other countries. China has become a global power, but there is too little debate about how this has happened and what it means. |
